Balancing family life and a successful business can be a daunting task, especially for mothers who face constant pressure to juggle many responsibilities at once: kids, household chores, clients, and business. It's easy to slip into a self-doubting spiral and feel like we have to sacrifice one for the other, but that doesn't have to be the case. In this blog post, we'll discuss how you can build a successful coaching business while still having more time for your family.
The Challenge of Building a Coaching Business as a Mom
As new business owners, we have to work a lot to build a successful coaching business. Very often, that means working long hours, which takes us away from our loved ones. This can be especially very challenging for mothers with small kids.
When I started my online coaching business, my baby was just 4 months old. I was overworked, overstretched, and exhausted trying to figure out how to build my company and raise my daughter at the same time. It was challenging and overwhelming to balance everything at once.
I constantly judged myself. When I worked a lot, I had that mom guilt that I didn’t spend enough time with my daughter. When I spent time with my family, the voice inside my head was judging me, wondering why I wasn’t working on my business, especially since it was a source of income for my family.
So, I knew I had to make significant changes if I wanted to create a wildly successful coaching business and still have time for my family.
Here are my three tips that boosted my sales, freed up my calendar, and gave me more time for my family.
1. Focus on income-producing activities 💰
With a small child who was very active and never slept, I only had maybe one or two hours per day for my business. To make the best use of my time and still bring money into my business, I decided to focus on income-producing activities. That meant I needed to do sales calls, talk to potential clients, and coach my students. This helped me boost revenue and made a huge impact on my finances.
If you only have an hour per day, focus on tasks that will help you make money and achieve your goals.
2. Stop doing one-on-one sessions. Build a course instead. 💻
Building my own course was the best decision I ever made for my company and my family. It freed up my calendar and gave me the time and freedom to focus on other important tasks for my business and spend more time with my family.
When I created a course, I invited all my clients to join the program, and I only had to teach the class once a week for 2 hours! This not only gave me my time back but also helped me have consistent monthly revenue and scale my business much FASTER.
3. Choose the target 🎯 audience that works best for you.
At the beginning of my business, I focused on a target audience that lived overseas. When it was morning for them, it was an evening for me, which meant that I had to deliver my sessions and teach my course in the evening.
At one point, I didn't want to work every night and miss time with my daughter. I wanted to enjoy evenings with my family and have dinner together. So, I decided to choose a different target audience that had their evenings when I had my mornings. This made a huge impact on my business and family because I was able to work in the morning and spend the evening with my family.
If your target audience requires you to work long hours, maybe you can consider changing it. You don't have to change your ideal client profile; sometimes changing the time zone, country, or continent can be very beneficial. And that can be done easily since we live in a very small and well-connected world.
My dear friend, balancing family life and a successful business is possible.
